In today's interconnected world, many feel more disconnected than ever. Music, a universal language, has the power to bridge divides and connect people across cultures. Album Book Club aims to harness this power, fostering connections based on shared musical tastes. Our core goals are to:
Album Book Club connects people through the universal language of music. Offering shared listening experiences, a platform for sharing favorite music, and a community of passionate listeners, connection and discovery. This study details the design and research process behind the creation of this app.
Employing a goal-directed design process, we prioritized understanding the needs, goals, and motivations of our target users. This approach, involved conducting thorough research to identify key features and desired outcomes for the Album Book Club app. This research, which included user interviews and competitive analysis, directly guided and shaped the app's design and functionality, ensuring it effectively addresses user needs and creates a seamless and enjoyable experience. By focusing on user goals from the outset, we aimed to create an app that not only meets expectations but also exceeds them by anticipating and addressing user needs proactively.
Kicking off our project we conducted a number a research methods in order to gauge what it is the user needs and wants.
Six interviews were held amongst a variety of participants, all respectively proactively listen to music. After the interviews the team convened together to complete affinity maps based on our findings.
After completion of the affinity maps we were able to consolidate our findings and group together what we believed to be the most important.
In order to understand the what the current music app scene looks like we completed a competitive audit on who we believed to be our biggest competators.
We created two personas representing user types we believed would use our product: a university student and a member of the work force.
After completing the research phase we moved onto wireframing and mapping out how the app would interact and run.
Here we mapped out the entire app from the various pages to the functions on each page.
Next, we created wireframes for the home page and the club home page as a guide for the rest of the pages
After all research and mapping was completed we finally started prototyping out our design, bring to life what we initially though about.
This project, my first experience with goal-directed design, proved a valuable learning experience. While challenges arose, our team successfully delivered a product that achieved its core objectives. Given more time or another iteration, I would prioritize wireframing to establish a stronger structural foundation and develop a brand identity early in the process to guide subsequent design decisions. While the project has room for improvement, it served as an excellent introduction to the goal-directed design process.
